Why are we opening this site? Dany and I feel passionate about small business. We both worked in corporate jobs and dreamed of one day being free from the whims of another - who held the purse strings and the power. It was time to change that and become free from dependence on others. The early 1990's were the perfect time for me to strike out and follow my dream of owning a business. The problem was, working for someone else in no way prepared me for being my own boss! I dug in and read as many business books as I could, learned how to write a business plan, took classes, and even learned accounting. The information was invaluable - the problem though, was there was no one to ask questions and use as a sounding board for ideas. Book learning is great, but one really needs to get feedback. My friends really couldn't help - they all had jobs - so they thought I was just plain crazy for even trying to be independent in the first place. They surely couldn't give me much advice on starting a business. Then I heard of the mentoring program run by the Small Business Administration (SBA). Your local SBA has volunteers who are retired business people who will coach you. I eagerly set up an appointment for Dany and me to see one of the mentors. Our day came and we were escorted into the gent's office. And, I kid you not - he grabbed my hands, pulled them across the desk towards him and looked at my fingernails. Then he told me I couldn't possibly run a garden store with clean fingernails. His advice as he stood and shooed us out the door was to go mow lawns for someone and come back in a few years..... That's mild compared to some of the mentoring stories we've heard. My story only involves a few hours of time and a little embarrassment, which is nothing compared to the thousands of dollars some people have lost from unscrupulous marketers who have no advice and are only looking to fleece you.
